Welcome to Thorpe Hall Lower School

Children attend our Lower School from 4 to 11 years and receive the individual care and attention they deserve within small, friendly and supportive classes.

The Lower School starts in Reception Class which girls and boys join in September of the academic year they turn 5 years old. Reception Class is a transition year, continuing to follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum whilst at the same time preparing children for Year 1. 

The curriculum throughout the Lower School is broad and balances creative, practical, sporting and academic subjects and topic areas. Every classroom benefits from state-of-the-art technology in the form of an Interactive White Board, computer and internet access. Thorpe Hall School prides itself in creating and purchasing teaching and learning resources that inspire and motivate children to engage in their learning with joy and enthusiasm. 

Lower School children are taught French from Reception Class, and have a school experience which is rich in opportunity. Children take part in regular Drama productions, sing in the prize-winning choir, play in the orchestra, make things in Design and Technology, paint, draw, write, talk, discuss, use numbers, experiment and create. 

Pupils at Thorpe Hall School are able to contribute ideas and comments on the way the school is run through the Lower School Council that meets with a senior teacher several times a term.

Each week there is a wide selection of extra activities that pupils can choose to do either before school, at lunchtime or after school. These activities include football, basketball, athletics, hockey, chess, art, choir, drama (including LAMDA exams) and a number of other clubs and societies that spring up as teachers find an enthusiasm and respond to it. Click here to go to our extra-scurricular page where you can download the latest pdf which describes our programme

In every year group there is one form with a maximum of 20 children. Each class has regular trips to places of educational interest. In Year 6, after SATS, children go on a residential trip to a dedicated activity centre.
