Welcome to Thorpe Hall Upper School
Pupils attend our Upper School from 11 to 16 years and become strong, independent learners able to take the initiative, think for themselves and achieve their goals in life.
Admission into Year 7 is by interview with the Headteacher and satisfactory school report. Places are offered to siblings of existing pupils, children of staff and then in order of date of application. Allowance is made to ensure a balance of the genders.
The curriculum in the Upper School includes Design and Technology, Food Technology, Textiles, Art, Drama, Music, lots of PE and, in Years 7, 8 & 9, a 'Choice Afternoon' of curriculum enhancement activities. During Choice pupils can engage with Golf, Tennis, Swimming, Squash, Sailing, Horse Riding and many other activities.
Pupils are taken on educational trips to the theatre and other places of interest on a regular basis. The school operates the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme at Bronze and Silver levels.
At GCSE pupils study Maths, Double Science, English, Literature - all as examinable subjects. They must choose five subjects from: Art, D & T (Product Design or Resistant Materials), Textiles, Food Tech, Media Studies, Music, Drama, Geography, French, Spanish, History, PE, Religious Studies, Business Studies, ICT, Computer Sciences. In addition, all pupils in Key Stage 4 receive PE and PSHE lessons. Thorpe Hall pupils can also access Cambridge-e, run by the Cambridge Centre for Sixth Form Studies.
Careers advice is delivered by experienced teachers as well as the Connexions Service which is run by the Local Authority. Though Thorpe Hall School does not have a sixth form we are able to offer well informed guidance about which of the many excellent schools and colleges might suit each pupil.
