GCSE Results
In 2015 OfQual re-introduced 'norm referencing' for all GCSEs meaning that the reforms of Curriculum 2000 were reversed. This means that for every grade in every subject across all exam boards there is now an expected % of pupils that will achieve that grade - previously if a pupil gained the right mark they were awarded the corresponding grade. In 2015 83% of Thorpe Hall pupils gained 5 or more A* to C grades, with 80% gaining 5 or more A* to C grades including English and Maths. This latter figure was a significant improvement on previous years and reflected increased investment in Maths. 40% of all grades achieved were at B or above.
In 2014, the Government applied considerable downward pressure on English results in particular and OfQual issued warnings that patterns of results in general may differ considerably from previous years. In this context, our result of 89.5% of pupils gaining 5 or more A* to C grades was excellent. In this year 22% of all grades were A* or A and 45% were in the range of A* to B. Our top scorer gained 9 A*s and an A. We also heard that our top scorer from 2012 has gained the A Level grades to go to Cambridge University.
In 2013, Thorpe Hall retained a very strong record of good results. 84% of students achieved 5 of more A* to C grades which is well above the national average of 68%. Around 17% of exams taken resulted in an A* or A; around 41% of exams taken resulted in a B grade or better.
In 2012 100% of Girls achieved 5 or more good GCSE grades. Overall 71% of girls and boys achieved 5 or more good grades including English and Maths. 18% of all exams taken were graded A* or A.
In 2011 94% of THS pupils achieved 5 or more good GCSE grades including Maths and English. 26% of all exams taken were graded A* or A. 100% of girls achieved 5 or more A* to C grades of which 100% included English and Maths.
Thorpe Hall is a strictly non-selective school and therefore educates children of all ability levels. We are especially proud of our 'value added' scores which have consistently been in the top 25% of all schools in England. 'Value Added' scores are calculated using baseline assessments in Year 7 which predict the performance of pupils at GCSE. Our pupils regularly out-perform these predictions, and our average value added score represents an additional 0.75 grade-lift per subject per pupil.
With a 5 year average of 88%, the percentage performance scores listed below are for genuine GCSE or IGCSE exams, not for BTech or GNVQ equivalents.
